Letitia Englund, Vancouver Web Developer

After a 4-year stint at the University of St. Thomas (Minnesota), I emerged with a clean B.A. in Broadcast Journalism and English. I spent several years on the straight path, working at a local television station and, later, at a large publishing house.

Both jobs involved updating company websites, which gave me a first taste of the seedy back end of web development. Over the years, I became addicted to little things like HTML tags and FTPing.

In 2009, I finally broke down and joined the BCIT New Media Design and Web Development program. Coding went from something I talked about socially to something I did in my own time, often into the wee hours of the morning. I went so far as to graduate with distinction; at that point, there was no going back.

I now dabble in all kinds of languages - HTML, XHTML, XML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, AJAX, PHP, MySQL - and have even experimented with bigger content management systems like WordPress. I've admittedly been involved with numerous projects, ranging from small business to city websites, and enjoyed every step of the process.

I tried talking about this with experts in the field, but that just resulted in a full-time web development job. I'm at a point now where I must confess: I'm a web developer, and there's nothing I can do to stop it.
